Hey, Where Did Thanksgiving Go?

Have you noticed Thanksgiving has pretty much been fully scrubbed from any retail presence? Since there’s little money to be made in regards to that sacred, American, national response to God for His goodness, stores now jump from multi-billion dollar Halloween to “Season’s Greetings”. Sort of can’t fully blame the stores for the Thanksgiving-Scrub (and I’ll resist going off on what is being done to those other two “holidays”). The clinical purpose for stores is pretty much commercialization (although some displayed human-kindness and righteous observation might be nice). In reality, the holiday is ours to maintain and to demonstrate and to live out.

The redeemed of the Lord ought to actively embrace the spirit of thanksgiving forever, and at all times. A special day is particularly nice, too. We’re under the covenant of God, under the covenant of the grace of our Messiah. Thank God for that.

Meanwhile, most of the world walks in ongoing and increasing rebellion, defying most all aspects of God’s covenants, and, by individual lifestyle as well as corporate and global decision, continue to provoke God. “Light came into the world and people chose darkness”. “That is the condemnation”, says our Lord. (John 3:19, paraphrased).

The eternal word of God, non-negotiable and unchanging regardless as to who might proclaim otherwise (including from some pulpits), confirms that the prophetic course for our world is on time, on target, and on point.

And in the middle of it all, our great God remains fully attentive to the prayers of His people, and in His great wisdom has positioned us here, for such a time as this, to represent Him and to shine as a light in a dark and darkening place.

Within the context of prophetic reality, revealed in the middle of a rather harsh and truly judgmental psalm (a psalm addressing the most wayward and hypocritically religious people of God, so how much more glorious and ripe is this promise for those who would obey Him?!) there remains an eternal promise of glory and deliverance for any and all who will embrace right-walking with God, and who will intentionally offer thanksgiving from a pure and appreciative heart.

Psalms 50:14-15
14 Offer to God thanksgiving,
And pay your vows to the Most High.
15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

In all times, including shaky and troubling times, the divine admonition to give thanks, and the promise of God’s good favor, remains solid.

In fact, our giving of thanks can be seen as a potent counter-attack against the spirit of unthankfulness that we’ve been told will be coming upon the earth in our days:

2 Timothy 3:1-2
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

Our admonition:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Happy Thanksgiving.

About ez3728

I am a believer in Jesus - that He is the One and Only Messiah of the world. I believe the Bible is the perfect and complete Word of God, and that God is absolutely competent and capable of keeping His Word perfect, undefiled, and uncorrupted. Jesus was born Jewish. So was I. He lived a perfect life, and is worshiped. I live an imperfect life, and I worship Him.
